Free web tools - part 2
Free design tools to enhance your marketing assets
In a follow-up to our previous blog post on free web tools, here we outline some more free resources you can use to improve the design of your marketing assets. All without needing to hire a graphic designer or invest in expensive design software.
Free fonts with Font Squirrel
Font Squirrel is a hand-selected database of open source and free typefaces for commercial use. The website is incredibly easy to use and features a 'font identifier' tool, so if you see a font you like on an image, simply upload the image and the tool will identify any fonts that match it. There is also a support forum to address any issues you may have with getting your font to display correctly in Photoshop or on the web.
Icon Archive is a tag based icon search engine that contains over 500,000 icon sets. You can save and organise your favourites without having to login and choose from a range of free iconsets that can be used commercially without a payment. The website features a useful search tool which enables you to filter search results by colour, background colour, style, size and popularity.
Design your own logo
Free Logo Design produces professional looking logos for use on your website and on social media channels. Aimed at small businesses and freelancers, it is quick and easy to use. There are thousands of templates to choose from and you can customise the colours, size and shape to suit your business needs. For a small fee you can also download a high resolution version for use on printed material.
Infographics are an effective way to present complex information in graphical format and are easier to consume that text. As such, they are becoming an increasingly popular way to share information and are widely shared on social media, helping to extend your brand reach.
At Web Foundry we create infographics using Piktochart, a free tool to create professional, eye catching infographics. The tool is really easy to use – choose from a database of free templates, edit the colours, add icons and images or even import data from excel to create a graphical bar or pie chart. The end result always looks professional and as the editing is done in-house, the tool saves you time and money.
Here's an example of an infographic we created in Piktochart:
Design inspiration with COLOURlovers
COLOURlovers is a creative community that provides the largest online collection of colour pallettes and patterns. If you’re looking for design inspiration, this is the place to come. Colours and designs are helpfully categorised into groups such as digital art, print and web. There are forums and groups you can join if you have any design related issues or questions.
Photo editing with BeFunky
This free resource provides basic photo editing functionality such as crop, resize and rotation tools. It also has more advanced options such as cartoon maker, oil painting and pop art effects and text and graphic overlays. The tool works a little like Photoshop but in a more simple form. The platform also features a collage maker with layouts designed especially for Facebook and Pinterest to help your social media posts stand out from the crowd.
